Let's Talk A Little About The MW "Master Of Wine"

The Master of Wine (MW) is a qualification (not an academic degree) awarded by the Institute of Masters of Wine in the United Kingdom. The MW qualification is generally regarded in the wine industry as one of the highest standards of professional knowledge.

The Institute was founded in 1955 and the MW examinations were first organized in 1953 by the Worshipful Company of Winemakers and the Wine and Spirits Association.

Membership

Prior to 1983, screening was limited to United Kingdom wine importers, merchants and retailers. The first non-British Master of Wine was awarded in 1988. As of October 2017, there were 369 MW living in 29 countries. The MWs are spread across 5 continents, of which the United Kingdom has 208 MWs, the United States has 45 MWs, Australia has 24 MWs, and France has 16 MWs. There are 9 countries on the list with 1 MW each.

Today, wine club memberships engage in a variety of activities, including winemakers, grape growers, wine consultants, wine writers and journalists, wine educators, wine service, restaurant and hotel management. In addition, many of them are involved in buying, importing, distributing, selling and marketing wine.

What is most often served with wine?

Let’s start with some basic guidelines. Foods with strong aromas and harsh flavors, as well as cigarettes, overpower the taste.

You won’t even understand what kind of drink you were drinking – dry or semi-sweet, you won’t feel the opening of the wine bouquet.

Therefore don’t combine smoking with wine tasting. What else you should consider when choosing an appetizer:

  • To accentuate the taste of the wine, serve the national dishes of the country where the drink came from;
  • The hue of the dish continues the color scheme of the wine, but there are universal options.

As An Appetizer White Wine:

  • hard, semi-hard and soft varieties of cheese;
  • meat (cuts, meat dishes);
  • bread, biscuits, crackers;
  • fruits;
  • fish;
  • chips, potato and fruit;
  • olives.

The simplest and most versatile options:

  • cheese plate (cut 3-5 varieties of cheese, in addition you can put walnuts in the plate);
  • fruit platter (standard plate includes seedless grapes, apples, pears);
  • vegetable cuts (tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, asparagus, dill and parsley greens);
  • dried fruits (dates, dried pineapples, kiwi);
  • large olives in combination with unsweetened crackers or biscuits.

Appetizers for red wine

  • blood- or medium-rare steak;
  • shish kebab;
  • sliced smoked meats of different varieties;
  • slices of smoked and semi-smoked sausage;
  • risotto;
  • pasta with meat sauce;
  • burgers.

Appetizers for white wine

  • all varieties of red fish, lean and river fish, steamed or baked.
  • seafood: Squid, mussels, and other sea creatures.
  • rabbit, veal, or poultry meat. Turkey, tender chicken in cream sauce, rabbit in gravy without crispy crust will be a good addition to a delicate bouquet of white wine.
  • a plate of a few simple products. For example: soft cheese, walnuts and grapes.
  • tartlets with cream sauce, fish or salad (you can try Olivier).
  • vegetable and meat rolls.
  • crackers with a vegetable and fruit plate. Choose a cracker with a neutral flavor, diversify the composition of fruit and vegetable cuts – and the result will be excellent.

FAQ

Wine can last for years or even decades if stored properly, depending on the type and vintage.

Wine can last up to 3-5 days after opening, depending on the type and storage conditions. Store it in the fridge and ensure the cork is tightly closed.

Dry white wine is a type of wine that is not sweet and has no residual sugar. It has a crisp taste and is often used for cooking and pairing with seafood.

To prevent warming the wine with your hand, hold the wine glass by the stem rather than the bowl.

Ice wine is a type of wine made from grapes that have frozen on the vine. The grapes are harvested and pressed frozen, resulting in a sweet and concentrated wine.

A 5-ounce glass of white wine contains around 120-150 calories, depending on the type and alcohol content.

There are typically 4-6 glasses of wine in a standard 750ml bottle, depending on the serving size.

Fortified wine is a type of wine that has been fortified with distilled spirits, such as brandy. This results in a higher alcohol content and a longer shelf life.
